This book helps its readers to better understand the needs of children with differing cultural backgrounds and offers some effective ways of dealing with the varied reactions of children to situations caused by cultural differences. The author's basic aim is to show how we can make use of cultural difference to enrich children's lives rather than treating it as a problem. By helping them and the workers who care for them to understand other cultures better, we can help to reduce intolerance and counter persecution before it develops into adult behaviors.

They argue that while the corporations are ostensibly only engaged in the perfectly legitimate business of emptying parents' pockets through the judgement of their kids, they are also reshaping the experience of childhood itself into a prefabricated product for consumption. Among the targets are Disney movies, Sesame Street, Barney, Beavis and Butt- Head, sports, trading cards and McDonald's.

Book News, Inc., 02/01/97:
McCarthy (sociology, Fordham U.) argues that knowledge exists within a cultural context creating meanings and categories through the influences of language and media. Her introduction to the sociology of knowledge sweeps across classic texts by reconsidering the terms of Marx and Mead, the influence of the structuralists and poststructuralists in the study of "culture theory," and transformative studies in comparative history and social psychology. Much of this recent cultural work has resulted in new paradigms as evidenced by the author's discussion of "engendered knowledge," manifested in the intersection of feminism and science.

Our Price: $19.25 ~ You Save: $8.25 (30%)
Card catalog description
In the midst of the heated battles swirling around American humanities education, Peter Stearns offers a reconsideration not only of what we teach but also of why and how we teach it. While conservatives defend a museum-like humanities curriculum, their opponents argue for opening the canon to the works and lives of women and minorities. This approach, Stearns cautions, risks substituting one memorized content for another. Stearns suggests an alternative strategy; one that overlaps with some of the radicals' goals but moves on to a more ambitious reassessment of what the humanities should convey to students. It is important, Stearns concludes, to use the current spirit of rancor constructively to build a solid educational structure, one that rests on humanities scholarship but aims to help students better understand the nature of human culture and social behavior.
