History
of Africa
Centuries
before the first civilizations arose along the Nile River,
kingdoms were established in the Nubian desert and Ethiopia.
These people were skilled in arts and crafts, and may have from
further south in Uganda or Somalia. Kush and Nubia were the most
developed of the predynastic kingdoms of the Nile, and they
formed the basis of Egyptian civilization to follow (Diop 1985).
The origins of Kush is shrouded in legend and myth, and very
little is known about them.
The Nubians cultivated crops, made pottery and axes,
wove blankets, and used instruments made of flint, copper, gold
and ivory. They also smelted iron. They travelled up the Nile and
began to influence the culture of Upper Egypt, before the reign
of Narmer (3200 BC).
